This is a call for help. I got the Idea of using a Motorola stereo radio (approx 40 yrs or so old) with two nice speakers, for the sound on a 42″ LCD tv. It works nicely. I need to build a remote control device to control volume (have to use manual knob now–inconvenient). I thought about controling the output from TV to the stereo amp (limited range). Anyone have any ideas like that?

Yes, that would work - just disconnect the speakers inside the television, connect the “Audio out” jacks of the television to the “accessory in” jacks of the stereo, and use the TV’s remote to control the volume.
Or you can diisconnect the speakers inside the television and wire them to the speakers of the radio, bypassing the radio amplifier. Before doing that, make sure the speakers are the same impedance.
