Stuff I want to do.

You can explain to a child that listening to music at a high volume can cause hearing loss, but that doesn’t mean they will listen. Then again, you could make this neat little device and make them use it. The only problem? How do you get them to keep it plugged in? - Link

Why not just cut the earphone jack of, peel back some wire insulation, open the cd player/tape player/ipod up and then solder the device directly to the device’s port? In theory it works perfectly.

You could also buy only European portable devices… They require a volume limit by law now. =) Seriously, not mocking this project. I like it a whole lot. If your child is using headphones that aren’t too small, you could probably put some resistors in line with the speakers if you could break it apart, or if the headphones have an inline volume knob, you can add resistors into the casing.

The picture above looks like the intention is to build an interchangable one for use with all of your gadgets or they really mean to generate interest to market it as an after-market accessory. The simplest way to “force” usage by your kids is to cut their headphone cable in two then strip and solder each piece into the appropriate end of the circuit contained within the device shown. You’ll lose some cord length due to the strain relief knots you should tie but that will be offset by the ose sotube length. Or simply design the tube to take strain reliefs such as the small ones that RS used to sell…sorry can’t locate catalog #.

Cool…. Children do need to save their hearing, they will regret it later if they don’t.
