Modern Traffic light work mostly on either timers ( to control traffic), or isolation loops(to “sense” when a vehicle is present). Isolation loops are great for cars because the metal of the car disrupts the resistance of the loop, telling the traffic light that it should change. Motorcycles however do not have enough metal to “interrupt” the signal. Here’s how I changed all that for my bike trips.
What you will need:
1 Project Box - 270-1879
1 Package of Rectangular Magnets - 640-1879
2 Packages of Rare Earth Magnets - 640-1895
1 Container of Sup Glue - 640-2308
1 Package of Wire Ties - 278-1655
Inside the project box there are 4 raised areas on the bottom that are the perfect size for the 4 rare earth magnets.
Step 1: Glue the 4 rare earth magnets on the raised areas making sure thay are all facing in the same polar direction.
Step 2: Glue on 2 of the rectangular magnets between them, also pointing in the same polar direction.
Step 3: Glue on 2 more rectangular magnets on the top of the project box so that they “push” away from the magnets on the bottom of the box.
Step 4: Cut a notch on both long sides of the top of the project box just large enough to fit a single wire tie.
Step 5: Place the wire tie in the notches you just created, and screw the lid back on to the project box.
Step 6: Find a spot low on your motorcycle that does not move and will not create clearance issues, and strap it on.

I have been dealing with this issue for years. After 30 minutes of work and about $15 bucks I cannot believe how good this works. Well Done. No more waiting for cars to trip the traffic light for me anymore!
Thats AWESOME! I wish the text would have been a little easier to read, but thats all up to RadioShack. I’ll build it today and test it out, it sure is a nice day for a ride. Thanks!
Philip,
I have been riding a bike for 8 years and I wish I would have that thought of your great invention. I built your traffic light switch this morning and tested it out, I have to say it works great!!!!. The great thing about your traffic light switch it only cost around $15 to build. Way to go Philip
Been done. Called Priority green.
Priority green is an infrared transmitter that works for EMERGENCY PERSONEL ONLY! Go ahead and use one if you aren’t and that is impersonating an officer, at least in NY. This box is legal, but I guess that isn’t important to some people.
BTW I guarantee, it is WAY more than $15. This is a great project that works well, and is cheap and LEGAL in all 50 states(because it is passive, not active). Ignore people who just want to be smarmy, have fun building, and have fun not spending your entire day waiting for the light to change.
I think that it is great! I wouldn’t have though that 8 small magnets would have enough gauss to mimic the mass of a car but it is great to know that they do.
Now that we have this knowledge we just have to figure out a way to abuse it… Dun dun dun…
You could build one or you can buy one, either way it works. http://www.Greenlightstuff.com its called a green light trigger, around 12-15 bucks and does the same thing.
I went to the local Radio Shack and they said they had no record of Project Box # 270-1879. So we determined there must be a wrong number some where. We looked at the magnets and picked a box I hope will work. Project Box # 270-1801. If it works or not, I will report back.
