I am almost done building a display for my car that reads data from the car’s OBDII port and computes instant miles per gallon and trip miles per gallon then displays that information on an LCD so that I can tune my driving to get optinal fuel economy.

Please publish the schematics and parts lists. This will be something many people will want!

I forgot to mention, it is powered by an Arduino and uses an ELM323 to handle communication with the car’s computer.

Arduino’s are a great platform for small projects like this. They are a C-based microcontroller that has plenty of I/O ports for most smaller projects.

Would like to have the schematic. Sounds great

Yeah or you could just get a new car that has a mpg calculator built in…hell my ‘97 cadillac deville has it.

The project is great, especially if you publish the schematics and source code.
There is a similar device on the market called ScanGaugeII which is a small box with an LCD showing four parameters at one time: MPG, MPH, RPM, Fuel Rate, etc.
It costs 160 USD and it is available at ThinkGeek:

(I don’t work for ThinkGeek, but I had been eyeing this product)
If I were you, I would add a sound, a tick or beep that gives you real time feedback of the fuel rate, so that you know how to modulate the gas pedal for better fuel-efficient driving.
